Darron Can You Protect Your Xbox 360 from the Dreaded Red Rings of Death? The Xbox 360 is a great gaming console. The super fast graphics, wide variety of games, and the excellent online service keeps gamers playing for hours and hours. With all of that game time, the Xbox 360 can get hot – very hot!

How ‘Hot’ is Very Hot?

The Xbox 360 can get so hot it overheats causing the system to shut itself down. This overheating has also been linked to a range of problems that include hardware failure, disc drive malfunctions, graphic glitches, game freezes, warped motherboards, and chip failure.

It’s been estimated that almost a third of all Xbox 360 owners have experienced some form of overheating which can cause the Red Rings of Death.

Is there anything you can do to prevent this from happening?

Basic common sense is your best weapon against your Xbox 360 from overheating. Try these simple tips to keep you gaming and your Xbox cool…

  • Where do you store your Xbox 360? It may look great on the credenza shelf or media cabinet, but that area does little of offer the 360 a source of fresh air. Restrictions around your Xbox 360 can cause the unit to overheat easily. Try moving your Xbox console to an open – well ventilated area while playing. I know it won’t look as good as in that cabinet, but I think you’ll be happier not having to send the unit to Microsoft for repairs.
  • How clean is the area around your 360? Dust can be a real hazard for electronic components such as computers or your Xbox 360. Dust loves to settle into tight places such as heat sinks, cooling fans, computer chips, and ventilation vents. All of this added material also makes an excellent insulation blanket adding to component heat which leads to failure. Your best advice is to keep the area around your Xbox as clean as possible and occasionally blow out the vents in the Xbox console to remove built up dust accumulation.
  • Do you keep your Xbox in direct sunlight? Items left in the sun can be warm to the touch – imagine how that adds to the internal temperature of your 360. Keeping you Xbox cool and in a well ventilated area is your best choice for avoiding the Red Rings of Death.

These are just a few simple ideas to follow that will allow you to stay in the game and prevent your Xbox from overheating.
